From alcohol addiction to multi-millionaire: an inside story
Back in 1985 my life was a blur of trading tickets and cocktails. I was at the epicentre of capitalism, working on the trading floor on Wall Street by day and partying at New York’s legendary bars and clubs at night. The pressure and the infamous “greed is good” culture made the life of a floor trader extremely stressful and physically demanding, but I had a lifestyle that was the envy of thousands of hungry young graduates.
By 1987, I was burned out, broke and with nowhere to go. It was the wakeup call I desperately needed.
It took me six years of recovery from my addictions and alcoholism before I really felt ready to start my life and career over again. I was still about as far from being a successful business leader as anyone could be, but I had been accepted to graduate school to get an MBA and I thought that would be my path to success. As it transpired, I never did make it to grad school, and a trip to Estonia in 1992 took my life in a very different direction.
